Restaurants in Hyderabad Face Food Safety Violations

Hyderabad’s food safety task force continued its intensive inspections in the Gachibowli area, uncovering multiple violations across three popular restaurants on December 19, 2024. These inspections aim to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and improve public health standards.

Issues at The Nawaabs Restaurant

At The Nawaabs Restaurant, the inspection revealed several concerns about food safety and hygiene:

  • Unlabelled Food Items: Refrigerators were found storing raw chicken and mutton without proper labeling, raising concerns about traceability.
  • Suspicious Storage Conditions: Two kilograms each of onion powder and peri peri mix lacked labeling, making it impossible to verify their origins.
  • Rodent Infestation Evidence: Rodent excreta was discovered in the storage area, suggesting poor pest control measures.
  • Kitchen Hygiene Problems: The kitchen drain was blocked, causing water stagnation, and open dustbins were a breeding ground for contamination. The absence of insect-proof screens on kitchen doors and windows compounded the issue.
  • Missing Documentation: Critical documents, including water analysis reports, medical records of staff, and FoSTaC training certificates for food handlers, were unavailable during the inspection.

Violations at Berlin Restaurant and Club

The task force found significant lapses at Berlin Restaurant and Club, located in Gachibowli’s Atrium Mall:

  • Expired Ingredients: Expired food items like apple cider vinegar, peanut butter, mushrooms, sesame oil, and bamboo shoots were discovered in the kitchen and storage areas. These were immediately discarded.
  • Improper Storage: Vegetarian and non-vegetarian items were stored in the same refrigerator, violating food safety norms. Additionally, cleaning agents were kept alongside raw food materials.
  • Unhygienic Practices: Open dustbins and the absence of labeling on refrigerated food items raised safety concerns. Documentation, including pest control records, medical reports, and food handler training certificates, was also missing.

Findings at La Vie En Rose Café

At La Vie En Rose Café in Indira Nagar, inspectors noted the following issues:

  • Structural and Hygiene Deficiencies: The kitchen floor was slippery, and the cake preparation area’s ceiling and walls had flaking paint, shedding particles that could contaminate food.
  • Unlabelled Raw Materials: Some raw materials in storage lacked proper labeling.
  • Used Oil Mismanagement: The café did not test used oil for “total polar compounds,” indicating possible overuse beyond permissible limits.
  • Inadequate Pest Control: Doors and windows lacked insect-proof screens, leaving the establishment vulnerable to contamination.

Broader Impact of Inspections

These inspections are part of a broader crackdown on food safety violations in Hyderabad, targeting not just restaurants but also dairy units and other food establishments. The task force’s findings highlight the need for stricter adherence to food safety protocols to protect public health.
