Rice University Opens India Center to Strengthen Global Research Collaborations
In a strategic move to expand its international footprint, Rice University India Center has launched – it is a new research center in Bengaluru, India. This marks the prestigious private institution’s second physical presence outside the United States, following the establishment of the Rice University Paris Center in 2022.

The new facility, named Rice Global India, aims to enhance research collaborations in key areas such as sustainable energy, climate change, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology. Bengaluru, widely regarded as India’s tech hub, provides an ideal setting for the center’s ambitions, according to Rice University President Reginald DesRoches.
“India is a country of tremendous opportunity, one where we see the potential to make a meaningful impact through collaboration in research, innovation, and education,” DesRoches said in a news release. “Our presence in India is a critical step in expanding our global reach, and we are excited to engage more with India’s academic leaders and industries to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.”
Focus on Partnerships and Collaboration
Rice University inaugurated the center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday. The institution plans to build on its existing partnerships with prominent Indian institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) and the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru (IISc).
The collaboration with IIT Kanpur began in 2020 with the establishment of the joint Energy Materials Institute, which expanded in 2023 through strategic partnership agreements. University leaders expressed optimism about further collaborations with other Indian academic and industrial entities.
“When I talk about Houston and Texas and Rice internationally, people are really excited,” said Caroline Levander, vice president for Rice Global. “People don’t know that Houston has the largest medical center in the world… That’s very compelling.”
Bengaluru: A Strategic Location for Research and Exchange
The center in Bengaluru is expected to focus on research priorities identified by Rice faculty and host initiatives like research summits and conferences. Opportunities for engagement with Houston-based companies operating in India are also on the horizon.
While the office currently has several staff members, it does not have permanently based faculty. The Paris campus model, which offers summer school courses for Rice students, could potentially be replicated in India in the future.
According to Levander, the center is also expected to promote bilateral exchanges and strengthen Rice University’s reputation in India’s academic and professional circles.
“This expansion reflects our commitment to fostering a more interconnected world where education and research transcend borders,” DesRoches added.
Rice University’s Growing Global Presence
Rice University’s global strategy aligns with its broader mission to address pressing global challenges through innovation and collaboration. By positioning itself in India, the university seeks to enhance its engagement with a nation rapidly emerging as a hub for technological and academic advancements.
The India center is poised to serve as a bridge between the academic excellence of Rice University and the opportunities presented by India’s dynamic industries, fostering impactful solutions to global challenges.
