Director Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani attempts to be both a quintessential love story and a social commentary on tradition versus modernity. This cinematic experience, however, falls short of expectations, despite boasting a stellar star-studded cast.

Johar paints a vivid picture of two opposing households: the Randhawa Paradise, representing the orthodox Punjabi ethos, and the Chatterjee House, symbolic of Bengali modernity. The ensuing drama, where these contrasting worlds intersect, promises potential but often veers into the realm of cliches.
Plot & Performances
At the heart of the narrative is the effervescent Punjabi heartthrob Rocky (Ranveer Singh) and the intellectual Bengali belle Rani (Alia Bhatt). Their chance encounter pivots on the poignant past shared between their grandparents, culminating in familial face-offs as the couple attempts to bridge their diverse backgrounds.
Singh, in his signature flamboyance, embodies Rocky with unparalleled energy, while Bhatt, as Rani, delivers an earnest performance, holding her ground amidst a powerhouse ensemble. Moreover, Dharmendra and veteran actresses Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi deserve applause for their stellar roles.
A Visual Spectacle, Yet…
Aesthetically, the film dazzles with opulent sets, catchy tunes courtesy of Pritam, and moments of genuine humor. However, its overtly theatrical nature sometimes undermines the gravity of the message it tries to convey.
Tackling Stereotypes & Truisms
Throughout its run, the film wrestles with the challenges of confronting patriarchy, dismantling dated perceptions of masculinity, and breaking cultural barriers. Some moments hit the mark, while others, like the dialogues delivered, often feel heavy-handed.
The Final Verdict
For all its theatricality and occasional incisiveness, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani finds itself caught between delivering profound insights and reverting to formulaic tropes. “So typical!” as a character exclaims in the film – perhaps a sentiment some viewers may echo. The essence is clear: in attempting to create a contemporary commentary, the film ends up as a “shiny but shallow” portrayal of familial drama.
