Sanju Samson’s Unfortunate T20I World Record

India Clash Against South Africa

Sanju Samson’s Unfortunate T20I World Record

Indian cricketer Sanju Samson found himself on the wrong side of history, setting a world record that no batter would want. After two stellar T20I centuries in consecutive matches, Samson surprisingly followed up with two back-to-back ducks, an unprecedented record in T20I cricket. This performance has added a new layer to Samson’s already inconsistent tenure with India, despite the promise he displayed against Bangladesh and South Africa recently. When he scored those centuries, many thought Samson was on the verge of solidifying his place in the national lineup. Now, however, he has unexpectedly created an unwanted record.

Sanju Samson Joins the ICC Record Books

The wicketkeeper-batter’s recent dismissals bring his tally of ducks for the year to five, making him only the second player from an ICC Full Member nation to accumulate five T20I ducks in a calendar year, joining Zimbabwe’s Regis Chakabva, who set the record in 2022. Notably, Samson now holds the distinction of being the first batter in history to score two consecutive ducks immediately after hitting back-to-back centuries in T20Is.

India’s Strong Start Against South Africa in the Third T20I

Despite Samson’s early dismissal, the Indian team put up an impressive total of 219/6 against South Africa in Centurion. Tilak Varma delivered a remarkable performance with his maiden T20I century, powering India’s innings after South Africa’s captain, Aiden Markram, opted to field first. Seamer Marco Jansen gave the Proteas an encouraging start, dismissing Samson with just the second ball of the match. However, India quickly gained momentum with strong partnerships throughout the innings.

Key Contributions from Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma

Following Sanju Samson #s early exit, Abhishek Sharma stepped up, scoring a swift 50 off just 25 balls, including three boundaries and five sixes. Sharma and Varma built a formidable 107-run partnership, which laid the foundation for India’s high total. Abhishek reached his half-century in the ninth over but was promptly dismissed by Keshav Maharaj on the very next ball.

In the 10th over, Andile Simelane claimed Suryakumar Yadav’s wicket for just one run, and Hardik Pandya followed with a brief stint, scoring 18 from 16 balls before being dismissed by Maharaj.

Tilak Varma’s Maiden Century and Final Partnerships

Tilak Varma continued to dominate, putting up a vital 58-run partnership with Rinku Singh, which further bolstered India’s score. Rinku, however, was dismissed by Simelane in the 18th over for eight runs. Ramandeep Singh came in, adding a quick 15 off 6 balls and forming a 28-run partnership with Tilak. The innings ended with India at 219/6, with Tilak Varma remaining unbeaten at 107 alongside Axar Patel.

South Africa’s Bowling Attack and Chase Ahead

The Proteas’ bowling lineup was spearheaded by Andile Simelane and Keshav Maharaj, each claiming two wickets, but their efforts were overshadowed by India’s imposing total. South Africa now faces a challenging target of 220 runs to secure a victory and gain an edge in the series.
