“Shortcut” On Google Maps Ends In UP Canal
In a surprising incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, three individuals sustained injuries after their car fell into a dry canal. The accident occurred when the passengers relied on Google Maps for navigation and took a “shortcut” during their journey from Bareilly to Pilibhit. The incident unfolded near Kalapur village, highlighting the risks of over-reliance on digital navigation systems.
The vehicle, which was registered in Haryana, veered off course and plunged into the canal. Fortunately, villagers in the area noticed the accident and promptly informed the police, leading to the swift rescue of the passengers. All three sustained minor injuries and were immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention. The car was later retrieved from the canal with the help of local residents and a tractor.
Not an Isolated Incident
This mishap marks the second navigation-related accident in the region within ten days. In a tragic incident last month, three individuals lost their lives when their car plunged into the Ramganga River. The vehicle, also being navigated via Google Maps, attempted to cross a partially constructed bridge in Faridpur. The structure, which had been damaged during recent floods, was not updated in the mapping system. This lapse, combined with a lack of warning signs or safety barriers, led to the fatal accident.
These incidents underscore the challenges posed by over-reliance on digital navigation tools like Google Maps. While such tools have revolutionized travel, they can also mislead drivers, especially in areas where road conditions have changed but updates are yet to reflect in mapping systems. The lack of proper infrastructure, such as warning signs or barriers, further exacerbates the risks in rural and semi-urban areas.
Need for Caution and Awareness
Accidents of this nature highlight the importance of exercising caution while using navigation apps. Drivers must remain vigilant and avoid blindly trusting digital directions, especially in unfamiliar or underdeveloped regions. Authorities, on the other hand, need to ensure timely updates to mapping systems and implement safety measures, such as visible warning signs and barriers, to prevent such incidents in the future.
