Class 12 Student Detained for Bomb Threat Emails to 23 Schools in Delhi
Delhi Police has detained a Class 12 student for orchestrating a series of bomb threat emails to schools across the city in an attempt to avoid appearing for his exams. The student, whose identity has been withheld due to his minor status, is alleged to have sent the threatening emails on at least six occasions, targeting multiple schools each time, while excluding his own institution.
A Plan to Disrupt Exams
Officials revealed that the student meticulously devised the hoaxes to create widespread disruption during the exam season. By sending bomb threat emails to various schools, he aimed to force authorities to cancel exams, believing it would provide him with a temporary reprieve from academic pressure.
In one instance, over 40 schools, including prominent institutions like DPS RK Puram and GD Goenka School in Paschim Vihar, received emails claiming bombs were planted on their premises. The email also demanded $30,000 to defuse the purported explosives. The threats triggered panic, leading to campus evacuations and extensive security checks, all of which eventually turned up nothing suspicious.
Impact
The series of hoaxes disrupted normal school operations, with students being sent home as bomb squads and sniffer dogs combed campuses for potential threats. While no actual danger was detected, the incidents caused significant anxiety among students, parents, and school staff.
Former Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia commented on the alarming situation, stating, “I have never seen such a state of fear in Delhi.”
The disruptions also forced authorities to take preemptive measures. Delhi Police, in collaboration with the Education Department, organized seminars to train teachers and school staff on handling such crises effectively. These efforts aimed to enhance preparedness and reduce panic in the event of future incidents.
Investigation
The police’s investigation traced the origin of the emails to the Class 12 student, who reportedly used different schools as targets in each email to avoid suspicion. On one occasion, he sent a single email to as many as 23 schools. Authorities believe the student acted alone and had no intention of following through on the threats, which were purely intended to disrupt exams.
The student has been taken into custody, and officials are now examining the full extent of his actions and their implications.
The spate of bomb hoaxes has underscored the need for enhanced security protocols in schools. While the immediate crisis has been addressed, these incidents have highlighted vulnerabilities in the system and the psychological impact on young students. Authorities are urging parents, teachers, and school administrators to remain vigilant and work together to ensure student safety.
Delhi Police has reiterated its commitment to tackling such disruptions and ensuring the safety of educational institutions. Meanwhile, the detained student’s actions serve as a stark reminder of the lengths some may go to under academic pressure, prompting further discussions on addressing mental health and stress among students.
