Suspected JPC Rebels Torch Five Vehicles Amid Jharkhand Polls
In the early hours of Wednesday, amid the second phase of voting across 38 constituencies in Jharkhand, five heavy vehicles were set ablaze by individuals suspected to be JPC rebels – members of the banned Jharkhand Prastuti Committee (JPC). The incident occurred in the Laat jungle area, situated between the Herhunj and Latehar police stations. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
According to Latehar Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav, the vehicles were returning empty to the Tubed colliery from the Kusmi coal loading site when approximately a dozen individuals intercepted them. The assailants set the vehicles on fire and discharged firearms into the air. At the scene, authorities discovered a handwritten leaflet attributed to the JPC, warning against unauthorized coal transportation and earth-cutting activities without their consent.
The JPC was notably active in the region between 10 to 15 years ago. SP Gaurav expressed skepticism regarding a potential resurgence of the group, suggesting that local criminal elements might be invoking the JPC’s name to instill fear. He stated, “Further investigations are on.”
This incident marks the second occurrence of vehicle arson in the area within a fortnight. On November 5, two heavy vehicles were torched near the Amrawadeeh police picket, leading to the arrest of six individuals posing as members of the JJMP splinter group. SP Gaurav has dismissed concerns about a revival of extremist activities in the coal belt area.
The targeted vehicles were involved in coal transportation, a critical industry in the region. Such incidents not only disrupt local economic activities but also raise concerns about the safety of workers and the security of industrial operations. Authorities are likely to reassess and enhance security measures to prevent future occurrences.
Ongoing Investigations
Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the incident to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. The discovery of the leaflet has provided leads, but authorities remain cautious about attributing the act solely to the JPC without conclusive evidence. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of the populace and maintaining order during the election period.
