Techie’s Heartbreaking Farewell: “I Started Saving for Your Car”

In a 24-page Atul Subhash Farewell note left behind before his death by suicide, the Bengaluru-based techie penned a deeply emotional letter addressed to his four-year-old son. The 34-year-old software professional, who had been embroiled in a bitter separation since 2021, shared his anguish over estrangement, financial demands, and societal challenges.

Atul was discovered deceased in his Bengaluru home on Monday morning. His death has raised troubling questions about familial disputes, legal systems, and mental health support for men undergoing such ordeals.

A Farewell Letter to His Son: “You Feel Like a Blackmail”

In the letter, Atul expressed his longing for and disconnection from his son. Reflecting on their estranged relationship, he wrote:

“Son, when I first saw you, I thought I could give my life for you any day. But now, you just feel like a blackmail using which I will be extorted more and more… The truth is, now you feel like a mistake I made.”

The letter detailed allegations against his estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family. Atul accused them of using his son as leverage to demand money. He stated the courts had mandated him to pay ₹80,000 monthly for maintenance, but his wife allegedly sought to increase this amount to ₹2 lakh.

Family Speaks Out: “Demanded ₹30 Lakh to Meet His Son”

Atul’s brother, Bikas Kumar, filed an abetment to suicide complaint, alleging that Nikita and her family harassed Atul financially and emotionally. According to the complaint, Nikita demanded ₹30 lakh to allow Atul access to his son.

Bengaluru police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha Singhania, brother Anurag Singhania, and uncle Sushil Singhania.
Senior police officer Shivakumar remarked:

“His wife and her family members demanded money from him and harassed him. For those reasons, he died by suicide. An investigation is underway.”

Emotional Struggles

Atul’s letter also contained statements criticizing societal norms and legal systems, which he claimed exacerbate fathers’ struggles during divorce and custody battles. In a pointed remark, he wrote:

“The more I work hard and become better at my work, the more I and my family will be harassed… The whole legal system will encourage and help my harassers.”

His frustrations with systemic inequities and societal expectations were evident. He also criticized the misuse of concepts like “women empowerment,” describing it as a movement that had “gone rogue.”

A Father’s Final Words: “I Sacrifice Everything for My Family”

Despite his grievances, Atul expressed deep respect for his father and brother, stating he could not let them endure further harassment due to his financial obligations. In a poignant admission, he wrote:

“I can sacrifice 100 sons like you for my father. I can sacrifice a 1,000 of me for you.”

Atul also reflected on the love he had for his son, lamenting that his child might never understand what it means to have a father. He wrote:

“A father-son relationship can’t be written or understood. You will not know me. I wish I could have been with you.”

Demands for Justice

Atul’s death has ignited discussions about estrangement, financial disputes in marital breakdowns, and mental health challenges faced by men. Activists and experts are calling for more robust mental health and legal support systems.

In his last note, Atul wrote:

“Now, with me gone, there won’t be any money, and there won’t be any reason to harass my old parents and brother. I may have destroyed my body, but it has saved everything I believe in.”

Police investigations continue as advocates for justice urge a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding Atul’s death.
