Thai Woman Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn Sentenced to Death for Cyanide Poisoning; Linked to 14 Murders

In a case that has gripped Thailand, Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, a 36-year-old woman accused of being one of the nation’s most notorious serial killers, has been sentenced to death for poisoning a friend with cyanide. This conviction marks the first of 14 murder trials linked to Sararat, who authorities allege is responsible for a string of cyanide poisonings dating back to 2015.

The court in Bangkok delivered its verdict on Wednesday, convicting Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn of murdering her friend, Siriporn Khanwong, in April 2022. The two women had met near Bangkok to take part in a Buddhist ritual of releasing fish into the Mae Klong River. Shortly after the ritual, Siriporn collapsed and died. An autopsy later confirmed traces of cyanide in her body.

A Disturbing Pattern of Poisonings

Investigators have since tied Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn to a series of deaths caused by cyanide poisoning, with the first suspected case occurring in 2015. Police have linked her to at least 15 victims, of whom only one survived. Authorities claim she poisoned her victims using “herb capsules” laced with cyanide.

Sararat, described as an online gambling addict, allegedly borrowed substantial sums of money from her victims before killing them. Thai media reports she stole jewellery and mobile phones from her victims, using the proceeds to fund her gambling addiction and pay off debts.

Deputy National Police Chief Surachate Hakparn revealed the motives behind her alleged crimes. “She asked people she knows for money because she has a lot of credit card debt. If they asked her for their money back, she started killing them,” he explained.

Families Seek Justice

For the families of the victims, Sararat’s conviction offers some solace. “The court’s decision is just,” said Tongpin Kiatchanasiri, Siriporn’s mother. “I want to tell my daughter that I miss her deeply and justice has been done for her today.”

Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn Faces Further Charges

Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn  faces 13 additional murder charges, along with accusations of committing around 80 offences in total. Her ex-husband, a police lieutenant-colonel, received a 16-month prison sentence, while her former lawyer was sentenced to two years for their roles in aiding her crimes.

A Grim Legacy

While Thailand has seen other high-profile poisoning cases, Sararat’s alleged crimes stand out for their sheer scale and brutality. Her trial has sparked nationwide outrage and drawn attention to the vulnerabilities exploited by such crimes.

The ongoing trials will likely uncover more details about her methods and motives, offering a grim reminder of the need for vigilance against such heinous acts.
