UPPSC Exam Protest Intensifies; Aspirants Rally for ‘One Day, One Shift’ Exams
The protest demanding fair examination practices by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) has entered its fourth day, with students rallying outside the UPPSC office in Prayagraj. Tensions remain high due to this UPPSC Exam Protest, as UP police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) maintain a strong presence at the protest site, where students are calling for the PCS and RO/ARO exams to be conducted in a single shift, a method they believe would make the exams more equitable.
Students Rally for Fair Exam Conduct
Gathering outside the UPPSC office, aspirants chanted slogans and held placards, urging the authorities to revert to the previously practiced single-shift examination system. They argue that single-shift exams offer a fairer testing environment, eliminating potential inconsistencies across different shifts. The students’ demands have gone unanswered for days, despite discussions with officials.
On Wednesday, as the protests intensified, an FIR was registered against 12 individuals connected to an incident of vandalism, where barriers were reportedly broken, and coaching institute boards damaged. According to officials, this followed a night of unsuccessful talks between student representatives and authorities, leaving students more resolute to continue their peaceful protests until their grievances are addressed.
As the protest continued, students from across the state arrived in Prayagraj, with organizers expecting larger crowds each day. Equipped with supplies, including food and water, students have resolved to sustain the demonstration for as long as necessary. According to sources, students are working together to ensure the protests remain orderly, as they call for an examination process that they feel is both fair and transparent.
Political Leaders Enter the Fray
The prolonged protests have ignited a political row in Uttar Pradesh. Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav strongly criticized the Yogi Adityanath-led government, describing the standoff as “yogi vs. competitor students.” In a social media post, Yadav questioned whether the government would respond with further force, going so far as to ask if they would target student accommodations with bulldozers. Yadav tweeted, “The rise of the students will be the fall of the BJP. Unhone chalaya lathi-danda ‘Naukri’ nahi jinka agenda.”
Yadav further accused the government of prioritizing communal politics over critical issues like employment. “The BJP’s focus on divisive politics keeps people struggling for livelihood while they continue with corruption under a communal guise,” he added. He pointed out that persistent job vacancies and examination delays have left the youth disillusioned and frustrated.
Government’s Response
Meanwhile, UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya addressed the issue with a more conciliatory tone, urging authorities to find a solution that does not interfere with students’ preparations. Maurya posted on X, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ji, the BJP government has set an example of fair recruitment by acting against recruitment mafias since 2017. The government has given appointment letters to around 7 lakh youth, demonstrating a strong commitment to fair practices.”
Maurya continued, “Officials should sensitively consider the students’ demands and ensure a quick resolution. Our goal is for students to focus on preparation, not protest. Pending court cases should also be resolved quickly so that no student’s future remains uncertain.” Maurya emphasized that the state government remains committed to fair and transparent recruitment processes, reinforcing its stance that all capable candidates receive equal opportunity.
Moving Forward: Demand for Transparent Recruitment
The ongoing protest and the involvement of prominent political figures highlight the broader issue of transparency in Uttar Pradesh’s recruitment and examination systems. As students call for the UPPSC exams to be held in a single shift, they underscore a desire for a process that guarantees equal opportunity and reduces discrepancies.
With exam-related issues stirring youth dissatisfaction across the state, pressure mounts on both the UPPSC and the government to address the students’ demands swiftly. The continuing protest demonstrates a growing awareness among students of their rights and a united call for justice in the examination process. As the government weighs solutions, the demand for a transparent, single-shift examination format remains at the forefront.
