Uttarakhand Green Tax for Out-of-State Vehicles

Dehradun: Visitors to Uttarakhand will soon have to pay a green tax for using vehicles not registered in the state. The Uttarakhand government plans to introduce a cess ranging from ₹20 to ₹80, applicable to both private and commercial vehicles, according to transport officials.

Who Is Exempted?

The tax will not apply to two-wheelers, electric vehicles, CNG vehicles, and vehicles registered in Uttarakhand. Essential service vehicles such as ambulances and fire brigades will also be exempt, ensuring minimal disruption to critical operations.

Implementation Timeline and Process

Sanat Kumar Singh, Joint Commissioner (Transport), stated that the tendering process for implementing the green tax system is underway. The government aims to operationalize the system by the end of December. Automatic number plate recognition cameras will identify vehicles registered outside Uttarakhand. The tax amount will be deducted automatically from the vehicle owners’ FASTag wallets for a seamless transaction process.

Cess Rates and Options

  • Three-wheelers: ₹20 per day
  • Four-wheelers: ₹40 per day
  • Medium vehicles: ₹60 per day
  • Heavy vehicles: ₹80 per day

Vehicle owners can opt for extended validity passes to avoid paying daily. Quarterly passes will cost 20 times the daily rate, while annual passes will be 60 times the daily rate.

Why the Green Tax?

The green tax is part of Uttarakhand’s efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of increasing vehicular traffic in the region, which is known for its eco-sensitive zones and tourist-heavy destinations. By imposing this levy, the government aims to promote sustainable tourism while ensuring smoother road management.
