Shelly Oberoi, who joined the Aap Aadmi Party (AAP) as an activist in 2013, has become the new mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Prior to her political career, Oberoi completed her Ph.D. in management studies from IGNOU’s School of Management Studies and taught at several universities, including Delhi University, NMIMS, IP, and IGNOU.
Oberoi was a vice-president of AAP’s state Mahila Morcha and a councillor from ward no 86 of Patel Nagar constituency. She defeated her rival Deepali Kumari by 269 votes, winning from former Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta’s home turf of East Patel Nagar. As the first mayor of the reunified MCD, Oberoi’s priorities include fulfilling the 10 guarantees promised by the CM and working with all councillors to make Delhi clean and beautiful.
