Wife, Mother, and Brother Arrested in Atul Subhash Case

Wife Arrested along with with family in abetment to suicide case: The Bengaluru police have arrested Atul’s wife Nikita Singhania, the estranged wife of 34-year-old techie Atul Subhash, along with her mother, Nisha, and brother, Anurag, on charges of abetment to suicide. Nikita was apprehended in Gurugram, while her mother and brother were detained in Allahabad. Meanwhile, Nikita’s uncle, Sushil Singhania, also named in the case, remains at large.

The arrests come days after Atul, a software professional originally from Bihar’s Samastipur, was found dead in his Bengaluru apartment. His tragic death has triggered widespread outrage, fueled by the damning allegations detailed in his 24-page suicide note and an 80-minute video.

Atul’s Allegations

Atul’s suicide note revealed a troubling account of harassment and extortion by his wife’s family. The couple married in 2019 after meeting through a matchmaking platform. They had a son in 2020, but tensions arose when Nikita and her family allegedly pressured Atul to provide large sums of money for business ventures. When he refused, Nikita reportedly left the marital home with their son in 2021.

In 2022, Nikita and her family filed multiple cases against Atul and his relatives, accusing them of dowry harassment, cruelty, and even murder. One such case involved allegations of harassment leading to the death of Nikita’s father, although this claim was later withdrawn.

In his note, Atul accused Nikita of demanding ₹3 crore to settle the disputes and stated that the court had directed him to pay ₹80,000 monthly in maintenance for her and their son. He alleged that she sought even more financial support and restricted his access to their child.

Outcry

Atul’s note also criticized the judicial system for allegedly favoring women in such disputes. “The legal system encourages and helps my harassers,” he wrote. “With me gone, there won’t be any reason to harass my old parents and brother.”

He further accused Nikita and her mother of instigating him to end his life on two separate occasions.

Family’s Response and Legal Proceedings

Atul’s brother, Bikas Kumar, filed a case against Nikita and her family, accusing them of abetment to suicide. He alleged that Atul was under immense stress due to frequent legal battles, having made over 40 trips between Bengaluru and Jaunpur.

Nikita’s uncle, Sushil Singhania, denied the allegations, calling them baseless. “We are innocent,” he said in a media statement.

Social and Legal Implications

Atul’s death has reignited debates on the misuse of laws like the Dowry Prohibition Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code designed to protect women. Critics argue that these laws, while necessary, are sometimes weaponized to settle personal vendettas, causing undue distress to the accused.

As investigations continue, Atul’s case serves as a sobering reminder of the need for balanced judicial processes and greater sensitivity in addressing family disputes.
